What is Porn Addiction?

Porn addiction is probably the fastest growing addiction worldwide. Porn addiction is one of the several forms of sex addiction. A porn addict will usually know they are addicted, live a secret life, and have internal conflicts about their “double life.” They usually feel like people wouldn’t love them, accept them, or want to be with them if they really knew about their secret porn life.

Porn addiction can be used to escape abandonment, family of origin issues, neglect, or abuse including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. It can also be used as an escape from situations caused by poor choices. Pornography creates a fantasy world. When a porn addict goes to this other world, they are accepted, loved, or even worshiped. The porn addict makes up the script and the behavior of the actress or actors in their mind or by choice of porn and leaves this world to be served in the other world.

Am I Addicted To Porn?

I have heard this question for over thirty years of counseling porn addicts. I want to answer this question as quickly as possible. Here are the symptoms of any addiction applied to pornography. As you read them, think about your behavior and check off “yes” or “no” in your head. If you want to know what type of porn addict you are, you can read about the five types of porn addictions here:  The Five Types of Porn Addicts. It is very helpful to know what type of porn addict you are before seeking help. Let’s see if you are a porn addict. Check out the signs below, and ask yourself the following questions:
  1. As I look over the years, I am spending more time viewing pornography.
  2. My pornography appetite has grown in time or requires wider variety to be satisfied.
  3. When I am looking at porn, I am looking for that hit or high at some point.
  4. I have reduced other activities overtime including social outings, family events, sports, exercise, dating, and work to have more time to look at porn.
  5. I get anxious if I believe I can’t look at porn for a while.
  6. I get irritable if I don’t look at porn on a regular basis.
  7. My porn viewing has led me to experiment sexually.
  8. I have lost friends or romantic relationships over pornography viewing.
  9. I feel I am living a double life.
  10. I have tried to stop porn in the past.
  11. I have failed repeatedly when I tried to stop viewing porn.
  12. I have had social and/or economic consequences due to porn usage.
  13. I continued to use porn even after having consequences from pornography.
  14. I have sought help for my porn usage.
  15. I have had romantic partners or spouses that have complained about my porn usage.
  16. I know I am addicted to porn.

Now, take your answers and honestly ask yourself how you are doing in relation to using porn. You may need to seek help if you are struggling with a porn addiction. Needing help is not a bad thing or something to be ashamed of. We all need help occasionally with different things. Fighting pornography is no different. However, it is important to know if someone is able to effectively treat your porn addiction.

Many counselors and therapist have no formal training in this field. Finding a counselor who is trained by an organization, like the American Association For Sex Addiction Therapy (aasat.org) for example, can make all the difference in your recovery. AASAT also has a Find A Therapist page you can use to search for a counselor or therapist near you.

Getting Help Fighting Porn

Porn addiction help is harder to find than you think. Many counselors will falsely advertise they treat sex addiction. I have googled this in several major cities. 90% of those counselors who advertise have no certifications or extra training supporting their claim of being able to treat sex addiction, so be sure of their background when choosing a therapist. Secondly, verify that they are not masturbating or viewing pornography themselves.

If you were an alcoholic, you wouldn’t want a drunk trying to help you become sober. I have a polygraph result on my office wall proving thirty-three years of total sexual sobriety. Other counselors in the Heart to Heart Counseling Center also do polygraphs verifying their sobriety.
